WASHINGTON, D.C. – In some of his sharpest remarks to date, House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) issued a scathing indictment of Republican leadership Thursday, accusing them of preparing to "wipe out votes" next week and demonstrating a fundamental lack of seriousness about keeping the federal government open.
With a Friday, March 1st deadline to fund multiple key government agencies fast approaching, Jeffries expressed deep skepticism about the GOP's ability to govern, pointing to internal party chaos that has repeatedly stalled spending bills.
"The Republicans in the House seem ready to cancel votes next week," Jeffries told reporters in a fiery press conference outside the Capitol. "These people are not serious about reopening the government."
His comments come amid reports that House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA), facing a mutiny from his right flank, is considering pulling a key spending bill from the floor—a move that would effectively halt progress and all but guarantee a partial government shutdown.
"The American people are watching," Jeffries continued, his tone one of clear exasperation. "They see a Republican majority that is paralyzed by its own internal divisions. While Democrats have been united in our goal to pass clean funding bills, extreme MAGA Republicans are threatening to plunge the country into chaos unless their radical demands are met."
The political standoff marks the third time in less than a year that the federal government has barreled toward a shutdown. Speaker Johnson, who holds one of the slimmest majorities in history, has found himself caught between the pragmatic need to pass bipartisan bills and the intense pressure from his conference's freedom caucus to secure deep spending cuts and policy concessions that are non-starters in the Democratic-controlled Senate.
A senior GOP aide, speaking on condition of anonymity, pushed back on Jeffries' characterization, blaming the White House for a lack of negotiation. "Leader Jeffries is engaging in political theater. The reality is that House Republicans are working diligently to pass responsible appropriations bills that actually reduce spending and address the border crisis—something President Biden has refused to do."
But political analysts say Jeffries' rhetoric underscores a brutal reality for the new Speaker.
"This is the same dysfunctional playbook we saw with Speaker McCarthy," said Dr. Eleanor Vance, a political scientist at George Washington University. "Speaker Johnson is trying to please two masters: he needs Democratic votes to pass any clean funding bill, but doing so could cost him his job. Canceling votes is a sign that he doesn't have the support within his own party, confirming the Democratic narrative that House Republicans are fundamentally ungovernable."
As the clock ticks down, federal agencies have begun updating their shutdown contingency plans. The message from the House Minority Leader was clear: if the government's doors close next week, the blame rests solely on one side of the aisle.
"The responsibility to govern is the most basic test of a governing majority," Jeffries concluded. "So far, House Republicans are failing that test spectacularly."
